Chairman Jan Martens hands over the baton at the Limburg Youth Symphony Orchestra to Bas Schoonderwoerd after ten years of dedicated service.

After ten years as chairman, Jan Martens is stepping down. As of April 1, 2026, he will hand over the chairmanship to Bas Schoonderwoerd, former director of Parkstad Limburg Theaters (PLT).

The LJSO, founded in 2010, offers young musicians aged 14 to 25 the unique opportunity to play together in a full-fledged symphony orchestra and to further develop themselves at a high level. The orchestra consists of students from conservatories, music schools, and young talent from private music education, and plays a diverse repertoire, from classical symphonic works to collaborations with international soloists and conductors.

Change of leadership
After a successful and committed ten-year period, Jan Martens is stepping down as chairman of the LJSO. He is succeeded by Bas Schoonderwoerd, an experienced cultural manager with a long track record as general director and head programmer of Parkstad Limburg Theaters (PLT), where he played a key role in the cultural development of the region for many years. In recent years, under Bas's leadership, Theater Heerlen has grown into one of the most visited and renowned theaters in the Netherlands. Additionally, he gave Theater Kerkrade a significant boost after it merged with the theater in Heerlen.
